While shooting the movie <strong>Wilhelm the Conquerer<\/strong>, a\nRomanian-Swiss-French coproduction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They needed a child to\nlook like the actress playing one of the main roles \u2013 Marina Procopie. She was\ngrown up Edith, Wilhelm&#8217;s lover, I was young Edith, who was in love with young\nWilhelm J)).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After I was chosen,\n&#8220;Mr. Sergiu&#8221; as I used to call him, found out that my name is Mladin\nand he asked me: &#8220;Was your father a rugby player?&#8221; I told him he was,\none from the golden generation, together with Radu Demian, Morariu, Stanescu\nand&#8230; others. I did not know all their names (the ones I mentioned I had seen\nin many occasions). Mr. Sergiu was a rugby fan (and a player!) and I was\nsurprised because I had not met anyone from my artistic world who knew my\nfather as a sportsman. Otherwise he was an engineer. He has never shouted at me. However I was\nonly 9&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I had him close by for\nevery scene I played. He would explain to me exactly how I was supposed to\nperform, how to move on the set and what to pay attention to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I was filming in a\nstable a scene during which I was supposed to milk a cow. I can still remember\nthat he placed himself so that the camera could not see him and, while I was\nagonizing trying to milk the cow (this is what I was supposed to play, but this\nwas the reality as well), he would hold the cows tail and he would hit my face\nwith it to make my torment even bigger. I was playing with it (No, it did\nnot rain that day&#8230;)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My gesture gave him an\nidea: he not only made me keep the straw in my mouth for the scene we were\nfilming that day, but then, in all the scenes I had, he gave me something: a\nsmall flower, a grass thread, another straw, building a particularity to my\ncharacter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I remember that, when I\nhad longer dialogues, it was quite difficult to speak with the flower in my\nmouth J).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Wilhelm Cuceritorul\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/BiYYLoK1Ygs?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Explanatory note: At the time, I did not speak any French at\nall. The film was dubbed in France, but it is shocking how similar my voice\nthen is to the voice of the girl who dubbed the dialogue in French!<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Wilhelm the\nConquerer, Mr. Sergiu sent me to learn how to ride a horse, at the Steaua Club.\nAlthough I cannot remember if there was any scene with me on a horse in the\nfinal version of the movie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I took fencing lessons\nto, to be able to have a duel, although the sword we were filming with had some\n100 kilos! Even more the armor I was wearing was a real one, heavy as hell. And\nat the time I was very thin! Mr. Gaitan was my father. I was playing the part of a peasant girl. We were living in the delta area. I only had a few scenes. My mother used to send me to\nhis place with a present every now and then. Mainly wooden boxes sculpted by\nsome very talented people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My visits to &#8220;Mr\nSergiu&#8217;s&#8221; home would invariably start with &#8220;and how&#8217;s your\nfather?&#8221;, after which we would speak, at my level of understanding, about\nvarious things. About the talking parrot Coco, for example, saved by him from a\ndark warehouse after the shootings for I cannot remember what movie. I would go\nto the cage and try to make him say the only word he could say:\n&#8220;Cocooo&#8221;. Mr. Sergiu would show me the places where Coco had eaten\ninto the wooden paneling on the wall during his time spent outside the cage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And, by the way, I used\nto admire all the spectacular objects he had on the walls (swords, guns), many\nof them brought from his filming locations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We would also talk to or\nabout Mrs. Gabi, his wife at the time, or about his sister. And then, as I had\nbeen educated to have common sense, I would stand up to leave. And that was the\nmoment! THE MOMENT!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At 9 years old, the\ngreatest joy was when Mr. Sergiu would open the drawer of the massive wooden\nbar he had in the living. That was THE MAGIC DRAWER for me. It was full with\nall kinds of sweets and jellies, that I had never seen, that you could not find\nanywhere in Romania, sweets brought from Germany, where he was traveling very\noften.
