<\/a><\/figure><\/li><\/ul><\/figure>\n\n\n\nI get off the train from\nLa Spezia and go towards the “tunnel”, which I read connects the\ntrain station to the city. (In other villages I found such a transit tunnel too)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It is a covered\npedestrian tunnel, through which I walk a few hundred meters. It doesn’t matter\nif you have suitcases, as you only have to go straight. The problem starts only\nafter you get out of the tunnel J).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\nOops\u2026 What do I see in\nfront of my eyes? The main street of the city \u2013 via Colombo, which climbs,\nclimbs and climbs! I think it has an inclination of 45 degrees, I feel my leg\nmuscles suddenly stretch! And I have a suitcase of 22.5 kg and a backpack of\nabout 12 kg!!!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“If it’s hard for\nyou, take a taxi,” I remember the owner telling me on the phone when I\nmade the reservation. Although the accommodation is a 10 minute walk away from\nhere. Well, I would take a taxi,\nbut where from?!? The street is as narrow as my arms spread out… And there’s\nno car in sight. Or rather… there’s one, a minibus carrying some kids\nto school. Should I take it? Well, that would be rather strange\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I give up and push the\nsuitcase up the hill. Because I cannot pull it, it pulls me back down the hill!\nI feel the compassionate look of those on the street. For me there is no\nreturn: I will be a laughing stock if I abandon the race\u2026 In addition, if I\ndon’t hold the suitcase well enough, it will go downhill and goodbye, I’ll have\nto fish it from the sea!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I push and keep pushing,\nI’m all sweating, that you might think that they hired me to push wagons! The\nbackpack is fighting me up this hill. And not only does the ascent never end,\nbut at some point it also changes its inclination \u2013 for the worse! I rest a\nlittle on a straight part of the road, to catch my breath. I’m getting ready\nfor the last assault\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\nYou can hear the water\nthrough the sewer where I stopped. Surprisingly, it’s not any sewage or\nanything, it’s a river!!! Rivus Maior \u2013 hence the name of the city. The river, in\nthis part of the town, practically flows under the main street. And it can be\nheard through the sewers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ok, I caught my breath,\nso I start pushing the suitcase further up the steepest part of the main\nstreet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/a><\/figure><\/li><\/ul><\/figure>\n\n\n\nI finally arrive, after\n15 minutes, on a flat harborion of the road. I am close to a small church \u2013 Santa Maria Assunta<\/strong>, specific to\nItalian villages. Thank God! I take a look inside, then take out my phone to\nlook up for where I’m going to live and find that it’s right in front of me. Yes!\n(Note: All this way up takes about 4 minutes, without luggage.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I check in, drink a\nbucket of water and then I go down to see the places.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Riomaggiore can be\nvisually divided into 3 parts: the train\nstation<\/strong> \u2013 from where the paths start to the next village (Manarola), the town center<\/strong> \u2013 with the main street\non which you can restore your\nphysical condition J and the harbor,<\/strong> the fishing district<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The main street, lively\nand full of shops and restaurants, descends to the sea among typical, colorful\nhouses. (Which, by the way, you can admire while breathing normally going\ndownhill J). These houses, which\nseem to be glued together, are called “case torri” (tower houses).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Before I go down to the harbor, I go to eat something as my stomach is\nmaking noises. According\nto the advice of the locals, I take it through the tunnel back to the train\nstation and go up to a nearby terrace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
